I have been in competitions ware I was hurting bad and wondering when the end would come.
In one swim competition I did the aim was to swim as far as you could in a pool in 1 hour.
“Cool!” I though, untill I started to hurt.I was sure I was near the end
I have learned a thing or two about the human mind through years of training.
What ever you focus on you get.
I was focusing on pain and getting bombarded with pain.
I told my self, “switch your focus.” I then started focusing on each 50 yards in the pool. Gripping
the water the best I could on each stroke and getting the most out of each 50.
Focusing on the 50’s I swam 1000 more yards and crushed my old PR.
If I had know I had 1000 left when I began hurting who knows what would have happened as mentally I thought the end was close. By switching my focus I forgot about the pain and covered a significant amount more of distance.
My triathlon coaching advice is this.
When in a race and things begin to get over whelming switch your focus and break the race down into
small bits.
On the bike or run focus on getting to the next land mark you want to reach such as a telephone
pole. Get the most out of each stride and or stroke until you reach that landmark. Then choose
another.
Peter Reid is regarded as one of the best Ironmen of all time. He use to count each step per mile in
the run section. This is another great example of how to keep your mind off the discomfort
and other negative thoughts that can crush you…..
if you let
Ware your focus is every thing.
You can choose what you focus on.
Focus on what you want.
